SOUND IT OUT RECORDS

SOUND IT OUT RECORDS One cool thing that we've been hearing about over here at RSD HQ is a lot of documentary filmakers taking on record stores as their subject. One project is from Jeanie Finlay, who's working on a documentary about Sound It Out Records, the last store in Teesside, UK. Here’s a video from the film, with Russell and The Wolves celebrating Record Store Day 2010 in the store. Jeanie's aiming to have the documentary finished by RSD 2011, and you can find out more about the project (and help to fund it if your dream is to be a patron of the arts) here: http://www.indiegogo.com/sound-it-out

Extract from SOUND IT OUT, a documentary about the finest and only vinyl record shop in Teesside, UK. Russell and the Wolves play an in store gig.

High Fidelity with a northern accent.

STARTING THEM OFF YOUNG...

Record Kid

Clay Scales, owner of 52.5 Records: "Our youngest customer said to me, "I can't wait to get home and listen to my records." Photos of more happy customers and scenes of musical bliss from Record Store Day 2010 available here: (may we suggest Full Screen and with info accompaniment?)

THANK YOU SNL

Saturday. Night. Live.  Seriously, Record Store Day started three and a half years ago when a bunch of hungover record store folks sat around a hotel lobby talking “what if...”  And now, there are jokes being made at our expense on Saturday Night Live Weekend Update. Damn. Just, damn! (We heart you Seth Meyers. What size t-shirt do you wear?)

A BIG THANK YOU!

A BIG THANK YOU to all the stores, customers, fans, sponsors, supporters, labels, distributors, friends and everyone else: Record Store Day 2010 was a blast. We are collecting photos, video and stories and can’t wait to share them with you. And don’t think we’re going anywhere: your local indie store is open all year, and so are we. We’ve got exclusive releases we’re working on through the year (see the info about THE BEATLES below) and every week we’ve got info on new releases, contests, store events, etc. etc. etc.  The world of the record store is strong and exciting, check back here to be a part of it all year long.

And now, may we suggest you listen to some of your new music, or watch your new videos. Or spend some time with old favorites. And when you head out to do errands, spread some of that good feeling you got yesterday from shopping at a locally owned store to other branches of local indie retail. Hardware stores, coffee shops, car washes, dry cleaners, video stores, restaurants. We would organize a special day for all of them, but we are a little tired.

RECORD STORE DAY COMMUNITY

This year we’ve been amazed at all the cool stuff that artists, stores and communities are putting together for our little holiday. So we thought we’d share just a little bit of that here. This is BY NO MEANS all the cool stuff, and if something’s not on here, it may just mean we don’t know about it yet.  We encourage everyone to check with their local stores to see what’s up in your neighborhood.  If you’re in a record store, then you’re doing Record Store Day right.

THE GIVING AND THE GETTING:  Even more places where celebrating Record Store Day can give you that warm, fuzzy, I-did-good feeling:  At Amoeba in Hollywood, a donation to Pablove.org will get you a nice t-shirt, screenprinted ON THE SPOT. At Recorded Memories in Spokane, they’ve been offering up CONAN O’BRIEN tickets to the sold out show, and are holding a bakesale which benefits the Alzheimer’s Association.  Now, really what goes better with music than tasty baked products? (Hope they have brownies—they are a particular RSD HQ favorite).

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY FOR... At Harvest Records in Asheville, NC you might not have to pay for all your Record Store Day goodies. They’re hosting a free raffle, and those tickets might just get you a Beatles Mono Box Set, among other fabulous prizes! (Oh and the Drive-By Truckers  in-store set is free at Harvest, too).

LOVE ACROSS THE AIRWAVES So there’s a guy with a radio show in NYC, who loves his record stores. So much so that he’s pressing up his own record, full of live performances from his on-air show or concerts, and he’s giving it to local NY record stores to sell on Record Store Day only. And he’s NOT ASKING FOR ANY MONEY. Which means ALL the proceeds from buying this record go to your favorite store. So we here at RSD HQ salute Rich Russo at 101.9 RXP and say to you in the New York area:  Pick up a copy of ANYTHING ANYTHING WITH RICH RUSSO ON 101.9 RXP EXCLUSIVE LIVE PERFORMACES  for us, won’t ya?

EXTENDED PARTY Electric Fetus in Minneapolis refuses to call it quits even when the store closes on Record Store Day. They’re continuing the party with a show featuring local stars IDLE HANDS and SOLID GOLD. Tickets to show are limited (only 200) and how do you get them? First folks to spend $15 on Record Store Day pieces get the golden ticket. Plan to spend all day and night with Electric Fetus.

AN EVEN BETTER REASON TO BUY SOME RECORDS
:  Decatur CD in Atlanta will be donating 10% of store sales to ALS research in honor of a store friend.

LOCALS RULE: Zia Records will be selling Volume 4 of You Heard Us Back When, their local music compilation. This year’s is a double disc with 30 tracks in celebration of Zia Records turning 30 and finally being a grown-up.

THE LIST IS GROWING New stores are popping up every day and at least two of them are having GRAND OPENINGS on Record Store Day. Happy Birthday to Dimple Records’ New Vinyl-Only store in Sacramento, CA (www.dimple.com) and Blue Groove Soundz in Arlington, VA (www.bluegroovesoundz.blogspot.com)

CIRCA SURVIVE RULES
: The band has set off on a Road-To-Record-Store-Day tour of indie record stores. Thanks for putting that together, guys! Find out where they’ll be http://www.circasurvive.com/news/road-to-record-store-day/

CRIMINAL RECORDS HEARTS RODRIGUEZ: The folks at Criminal Records in Atlanta put their money where their mouth is---flying in Rodriguez on their own dime, and putting out a special GOLD edition of Rodriguez’s special Record Store Day single. www.criminalatl.com

EXENE CERVENKA RULES TOO: We don’t know if Circa Survive and Exene are Facebook friends or just had the same great idea. The punk goddess/down to earth normal person is out on a tour of record stores as well:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Exene-Cervenka/179546810080

WALK ALL OVER WATERLOO: Cleveland stores Music Saves, Blue Arrow Records and This Way Out have gotten the whole neighborhood involved and put together the Walk All Over Waterloo, a sort-of Record Store Day trail of fun and frolic. www.musicsaves.com

TEACHING THE WHIPPERSNAPPERS A THING OR TWO: Silver Platters in Seattle is inviting you to find out what happens when you get all these folks in one place on a special day:
members of the Wailers, The Sonics, Don Wilson of the Ventures, Howard Kaylan of the Turtles, Jerry Miller of Moby Grape, and Merrilee Rush. Now that has got to be a Record Store Day supergroup record! www.silverplatters.com

Wilco Wears Record Store Day

We always knew that the finest folks wear Record Store Day on their chest. Including Glenn Kotche, manning the drums for Wilco. Don’t believe us? Check it out in this gorgeous video. Wilco has always been big fans of RSD (and vice versa). Are you? Because you too can fly the RSD flag on your chest—2010 t-shirts on sale now! Still time to get them before Record Store Day itself.

OUR AMBASSADOR, JOSHUA HOMME

Record Store Day is chuffed to have Joshua Homme follow in the footsteps of his Eagles of Death Metal compatriot Jesse “Boots Electric” Hughes as Record Store Day Ambassador. We’ve got some of his music being released especially for Record Store Day (Queens of the Stone Age “Feel Good Hit of the Summer EP”; a special picture disc and an exclusive t-shirt from Them Crooked Vultures) and Mr. Ambassador has recorded a little filmstrip for us. We’re sure you’ll enjoy it as much as we do. So now, a few words from our Ambassador.
